Sequel Retro Mystery Club Vol.2: The Beppu Case is back with a new adventure for you on Switch. Shinyuden, Happymeal, and Undercoders are giving us a new mystery case to unravel on Nintendo’s console. I enjoyed playing the prequel for our Retro Mystery Club Vol. 1: The Ise-Shima Case review, so I was looking forward to the next case in the series. As was the case for its prequel, this one has an 8-bit style presentation that will remind you of old-school releases from the Nintendo Entertainment System – a.k.a. NES – era.

Retro Mystery Club Vol.2: The Beppu Case Review - 1

You’ll certainly get a kick out of this one if you played games on Nintendo’s beloved console back in the day since you’ll be reminded of adventure games from the 1980s with a mystery twist. This is why, as you can see from the screens and trailer for this Retro Mystery Club Vol.2: The Beppu Case review, a big chunk of your TV screen – or for your Nintendo Switch console – will have a lot of black space. This is how classic games managed to present more detailed graphics for the screen within the screen where the story unravels.

For this new adventure, you’ll be in Beppu, in the Oita Prefecture. It’s time for you and junior detective Ken Kaimeji to unravel a new murder mystery to find out what has really happened. In the hopes of boosting the region, a new artistic event known as Technomix is set to take place. It’s an interesting opportunity in which Beppu’w traditional bamboo crafts are mixed with digital art. Soichiro Anan, the head of a prominent family of bamboo craftspeople, is collaborating with Artenova, a cutting-edge digital art group. Things get heated when those who envy and resent this event take their hate and escalate it to full-on death threats.

Because of all this, you and junior detective Ken are immediately dispatched to Oita in order to help with security at the event. Unfortunately, fate has other plans, and you will soon realize that things are not what they seem… right as tragedy strikes. A dead body has been found, and it’s up to you and junior detective Ken to do what you do best so that the murderer can be caught before it’s too late.

The controls for this sequel remain the same. That means you will control a cursor over the screen by using the left analog stick as you select from a series of commands: Ask, Investigate, Show, Call, Use Phone, Inventory, and Change Location. Ask will allow you to question the people nearby in the area you’re currently exploring. Show makes it possible to show evidence and other objects as needed.

Call is used for calling other people over. Use Phone will make your character pull out a smartphone. You can use it to take some pictures or even take a break from everything and play the game that is already installed on it. Inventory will allow you to review the information and evidence you’ve collected so far. Investigate will allow you to check out your surroundings to try and find anything unusual. Change Location will allow you to move to another area depending on how much you’ve progressed in the case.

You will have the possibility to customize your experience in the options menu. From there, you can choose from either having no filter for the image on your screen, activating old-school CRT filters, changing everything to black and white – for a classy film noir feel – or making it look like you’re playing on an old LCD. You can also change or remove the frame around the 4:3 section in the center of the screen and activate or deactivate the music, the SFX, and the old-school typing FX.
