This year’s hit PS5 and PC online shooter is experiencing a slow reversal of recent Steam reviews following fan pushback over Sony’s attempts to integrate PSN accounts for PC players.
Helldivers 2, released last February by Arrowhead Studios and publisher PlayStation Productions, began receiving pushback by fans after Sony mandated PSN to be integrated to Steam accounts for PC players by June 4. In the following days, the Helldivers community responded by review bombing the Steam port. This move was also encouraged by a community manager from Arrowhead itself (via PC Gamer), which in turn lead to the manager Spitz’s employment termination.
Sony has recently backtracked on their attempted PSN connection mandate, with GamesRadar reporting that fans have begun working on reversing the review bombing, which is cleverly nicknamed “Operation Clean-up”. Talk about real life imitating art… or vice versa. Heading over to the game’s Steam page as of now, recent reviews are still mixed while overall reviews remain mostly positive with over 624,000 total reviews. GR also points out the game’s Steam reviews graph, showing between May 1 and May 5 that there were as much as 90,000 negative reviews before curving down to under 2000 by May 7.
Despite all of the above considered, Helldivers 2 remains delisted from 177 countries where PSN coverage is unavailable. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt is pursuing efforts for Sony and Valve to restore the game’s availability for these countries, with Egypt and the Philippines mentioned as highlights by PC Gamer.
