Team behind Yuzu Switch emulator looks to settle with Nintendo for $2.4 million (UPDATES)

Just last week, we learned that Nintendo was suing the team behind Yuzu, a Switch emulator. Nintendo had claimed Yuzu has negatively affected their brand, illegally bypassed their software encryption, and caused direct harm to their game sales. One week later, the situation is already coming to a close and Nintendo is getting exactly what they want.

Tropic Haze is the team that has created the Yuzu emulator, and they have decided to settle with Nintendo over the legal matter. This will see Tropic Haze pay Nintendo $2.4 million in damages, turn over their yuzu-emu.org website to Nintendo, and stop distributing the Yuzu emulator. A judge has to approve this outcome before it’s official, but once that word comes in, this will be a done deal.

Many were wondering where this legal battle would go, as its outcome would either cause a major change in how Nintendo operates, or a rush of subsequent lawsuits from other devs/pubs against emulator-related products. If this settlement is agreed upon, the potential legal nightmare will be averted, at least for the time being.

While remaining quiet ever since the lawsuit hit, today we see Tropic Haze break their silence on the matter with a lengthy statement on why they’re closing up shop. You can see their message in full below.

UPDATE: A judge has signed off on the settlement terms, so it appears things will be moving forward as planned. The judge did not make any adjustments to the settlement terms, so all proposed above will be the final resolution.

UPDATE 2: Nintendo has officially taken control of the web domain for Yuzu. As of right now, the http and https versions will open to blank pages. It’s unknown if Nintendo will have them redirect somewhere else in the near future.
