Fallout 4 next-gen update rolls out with broken Xbox quality mode

Players collecting the Fallout 4 achievements following yesterday’s rollout of the highly anticipated next-gen update have been running into some issues with the Xbox RPG. Reports suggest that the Quality Mode on Xbox Series X|S is broken.

Fallout 4’s free next-gen update rolled out to players on all platforms yesterday, packing in Quality and Performance Modes and three free Creation Club packs, but it has been anything but a smooth experience for players so far. It’s been noticed that switching from Performance to Quality mode on Xbox has no effect, with the game continuing to operate at 60fps.

Soon after the update’s release, Digital Foundry’s Thomas Morgan posted on X, saying, “Fallout 4 fans on next-gen — I can confirm that only the 60fps ‘performance mode’ works right now. The update has a bug. Disabling the performance mode seemingly does nothing. It stays at 60fps and the res bound stays the same.”

It seems the bug is only affecting Xbox Series X|S players at this time, but that’s not to say that other platforms have avoided any issues. The update is supposed to be a free upgrade for players on all platforms, but PS Plus subscribers have been hit with a paywall. Bethesda said it’s looking into the issue.

Over on PC, Steam users appear to be having numerous troubles with the update, such as broken mod load orders, corrupted saves, issues with the newly added ultrawide support, framerate discrepancies, and more.

Earlier this month, players flocking to the game after watching the fantastic TV show found that the Fallout 4 achievements weren’t unlocking on Xbox, but thankfully that issue has now been resolved.
